Crime, its manifestations, causes and consequences are a concern worldwide. There is a global need for better understandings of crime, criminals and punishment.
Criminology at Sussex has a sociological grounding. You will explore crime and deviance from an interdisciplinary perspective. You will also study the wider social and structural issues associated with crime.
Learning to understand crime in the context of its culture, as well as the criminal justice system, you’ll focus on the real-world impact of criminology. You’ll learn from passionate academics who are active researchers on topics ranging from policing, terrorism, and victims of crime to capital punishment and crimes against humanity.
Our work impacts society and informs policy and practice. As part of your degree, you build practical experience through:
- modules and assignments that focus on real-world issues and build sought-after skills, from data analysis to creative problem-solving
- guest speaker events with a wide range of organisations, from local charities to the Crown Prosecution Service
- a student consultancy module where you can work on real employer briefs
- a wide range of electives that allow you to tailor your degree to your interests and aims.
At Sussex, you will be part of a supportive community of academics and students who will help you make the most of your degree.
Outside the classroom, you can get involved in the student-run Sociology and Criminology Society. You could also join the informal screenings and discussion of Crime Films organised by the Crime Research Centre.
