Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with employing science to the design, construction, and operation of processes in which materials change. The applications of these changes are necessary for the production of goods essential to our society. These include food and drink, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, man-made fibers, plastics, fuels, and energy. These manufacturing activities require processes that provide the efficient and safe conversion of raw materials into useful products. This should be accomplished at the lowest possible cost, with minimum energy consumption whilst ensuring minimum impact on the environment.

As new exploration and production of oil and future view of constituting chemical and petrochemical industries in the south of Libya, the Department of Chemical Engineering was established in 2006 to fulfill the demand of such sectors to chemical engineers and consultation.
