The department was established in 1989, and it was initially affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Education at Sabha University. In 1991, it was transferred to the faculties of languages, and in 1994, all the language departments were moved to Benghazi. The department returned to Sabha University in 2003 through the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Ubari. In 2009 it was transferred again to the Faculty of Arts at Sabha University. After the decision to separate the Faculty of Languages from Literature in 2023, the department became one of the main departments of this young faculty, along with the departments of English and African languages.
The French Language Department is a crucial department at the Faculty of Languages, Sabha University. Its importance has increased after the reintroduction of the French language in secondary schools. Consequently, this department has become the sole source for graduating professors in the French language, not just in the city of Sabha but also in the neighboring areas. The students of this department study French language subjects and some other cultural subjects for eight semesters. After completing the program, they are awarded a bachelor's degree in French Language and Literature. Graduates of this department work in teaching, translation, and several other fields. Admission to this department is based on the conditions and criteria specified by the department's regulations.
