The English Language Department was established in 1979 and was initially affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Education at Al Fateh University – Tripoli. In 1982, the name of the university was changed to Sabha University, and the department became a part of the Faculty of Linguistics. After the decision to separate the Faculty of Languages from the Faculty of Literature in 2023, the department became one of the main departments of the new faculty, along with the Departments of French, Swahili, Hausa, and Philology.

The English Language Department is one of the most important departments across all faculties of the University. It offers a bachelor's degree to its students in all its branches, including translation and linguistics. The department also teaches English language subjects to all departments of the University in all faculties. It is almost the only department that has a presence in the city of Sabha with all its interests and educational institutions, providing assistance with translation and teaching English while solving problems.

The department also has a postgraduate program (Master's) in Applied Linguistics. It adopts an approved curriculum and takes into account the latest measurement standards in its teaching programs. The department keeps abreast of the latest teaching methods for the English language for all its levels, which were determined with the help of universities and the unified international reference in teaching foreign languages. The teaching methods are based on four basic principles: teaching, evaluation, and interposition.
