The Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Utah prepares engineering professionals who are trained in depth in their selected area of research and instill independent and critical thinking to make transitions in new areas of research as required. The graduate training in the Materials Science and Engineering Department is designed to provide the foundation for life-long learning, and enhance technical skills needed to solve challenging technical problems. Learning Outcomes Expertise in their selected area of materials science and engineering research that equals that of their advisor or members of their supervisory committee. Ability to conduct independent research and be responsible for the execution and conclusion of the research. Contributions to the selected areas of materials science and engineering research as evidenced by the publication of at least two peer-reviewed papers in archival journals or conference proceedings. Ability to effectively communicate the results of their research.

Admission Requirements

6.5+
All international graduate applicants to the University of Utah must meet the following minimum Graduate School requirements: A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. college or university or from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in their home country. The Office of International Admissions will determine if applicants with international degrees meet the Graduate School's requirement of a recognized bachelor's degree. At least a 3.0 or higher undergraduate weighted mean GPA on a 4.0 scale. If the undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, a GPA will be calculated for the last two years attended if schooling was done at a foreign institution, and based upon the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) if the student attended a U.S. institution. Other English Language Requirements: 550 on the TOEFL PBT (paper-based).
