Study Level

PHD

Our program trains students to be independent researchers with expertise in the investigation of complex biomedical and pathologic processes. Students receive individualized training within cutting edge laboratories in one or more areas encompassing microbiology, immunology, cell biology, genetics, developmental biology, and/or biochemistry. This laboratory training is supplemented with specialized seminar courses, structured laboratory meetings, journal clubs, and special topics courses in addition to formal didactic instruction in basic and advanced immunology, cell biology, and microbial pathogenesis. Students are expected to develop skills in basic research, critical thinking, communication, and teaching, allowing them to effectively compete for positions in academics, industry, and government that demand productive research experience and a high degree of independence. Learning Outcomes Students should demonstrate a broad understanding of the primary disciplines associated with Microbiology and Immunology, including cell biology, immunology, genetics, and microbial pathogenesis. Students should be able to critically evaluate contemporary research literature and research programs. Students should be able to design, conduct, and defend novel biomedical research with a high degree of independence. Students should be able to develop and defend, in writing and orally, an original research proposal in the broad area of experimental pathology. Students should be prepared to teach at the college level, pursue further research training at the postdoctoral level, and/or work in industry.
