Program Purpose: The M.S. program in Chemistry is a professional graduate program for well-qualified graduate students seeking advanced training for research in all areas of chemistry. The program prepares the student for the professional practice in academia, research or industry in the field of Chemistry. The program also prepares the student for qualification for a Ph.D. degree program in Chemistry. Learning Outcomes: Have an advanced understanding of the main branches of chemistry, namely analytical, inorganic, physical, organic and biological chemistry. Be able to evaluate and synthesize research literature on topics within their area of specialization. Be able to conduct research that contributes to knowledge in that area. Complete an independent research project in chemistry. Write effectively about chemical research, making well-organized arguments supported by relevant evidence. Demonstrate an understanding of their professional and ethical responsibilities and appreciation of the impact of chemistry in the societal context. Have the training to be successful in careers that require masters-level training in chemistry (for example, positions in companies, community college instructor, etc. ). M.S. Non-Thesis Degree. The Master of Science, non-thesis degree is intended for those who wish to do work beyond the Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering but who do not wish to pursue the research oriented Master of Science thesis degree. As such, this option is typically for professional engineers. A minimum of 30 credit hours is required. Students have 2 options for this degree: coursework only or project management. The M.S. thesis degree allows for specialization in a particular discipline of Civil Engineering with an emphasis on research. A minimum of 30 credit hours, including 6 credit hours of thesis research, is required. The course of study must be approved by the student’s supervisory committee. Students must defend their thesis and have their committee pass them to graduate.

Admission Requirements

All international graduate applicants to the University of Utah must meet the following minimum Graduate School requirements: A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. college or university or from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in their home country. The Office of International Admissions will determine if applicants with international degrees meet the Graduate School's requirement of a recognized bachelor's degree. At least a 3.0 or higher undergraduate weighted mean GPA on a 4.0 scale. If the undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, a GPA will be calculated for the last two years attended if schooling was done at a foreign institution, and based upon the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) if the student attended a U.S. institution. Other English Language Requirements: 550 on the TOEFL PBT (paper-based).
