The Geography MS is a great avenue to an advanced career in Geography, or to a PhD. The Geography MS is research-focused degree that provides excellent opportunities to collaborate with faculty and with other grad students. The MS culminates with a thesis, which students develop under the guidance of their advisor and committee. MS students are eligible to receive teaching and research assistantship funding. These assistanships are awarded on a competitive basis and include a tuition waiver and subsidized health insurance. Advisors may expect basic proficiencies in statistics, GIS, cartography, writing, and mathematics – consult your prospective advisor to learn more about prerequisites.

The course requirements for the Geography MS are designed to be flexible, allowing you to specialize in the area of your interest. All students are required to take GEOG 6000 (Advanced Geographical Data Analysis), GEOG 6961 (Geographic Thought and Inquiry), and two research courses (e.g. seminars, which can be taken from a variety of offerings). Students can fill the remaining course elective requirements from courses in Geography or from other departments at the University of Utah.
