Program Purpose: The objective of the Human Development and Family Studies Major is to provide students with integrated knowledge and interdisciplinary understanding of family relationships and individual development over the life course and their role in social policy. Students choose from electives to expand their knowledge of particular life stage, family process, or institutional context (e.g., community, economy, school). Learning Outcomes: Understand, analyze, and apply basic concepts used in the study of lifespan human development and family studies Understand the diversity of family types and their relationships to larger social institutions Understand how social science research is conducted and used to improve the quality of life for individuals, households, and communities Conduct basic forms of quantitative data analysis, interpret data, and present statistical findings Students choosing the Early Childhood Education Emphasis will know, be able use, and assess effective educational approaches, strategies, and age-appropriate curriculum designs for young children
