Students should be able to analyze and interpret individual texts, with close attention to language as well as ideas. Students should be able to show their ability to work critically with fundamental ideas about literary genres, themes, styles, historical periods, and cultural contexts for literary and other texts produced in English and related traditions. Students should be able to integrate the perspectives of other disciplines when relevant. Students should show familiarity with major literary theories and critical approaches. Students should be able to demonstrate the ability to pursue research, using both technological and archival resources. Students should be able to synthesize relevant concepts and information from a variety of sources in order to address the complex issues or interpretive challenges that texts present and to develop critical hypotheses of their own. Students should be able to demonstrate the ability to communicate their conclusions persuasively in clear, effective writing, with a thoughtful awareness of different audiences, contexts and disciplinary conventions. Students should be able to acknowledge other perspectives and place their own arguments in relation to those.
