Student should have a B average in undergraduate work and show promise of scholarly development of ideas and sound reasoning. An adequate background in the biological sciences is required, as is the GRE. Graduate admission of Ph.D. students in the areas of molecular biology (biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, or development) and biological chemistry is done through two campus-wide Interdepartmental Graduate Programs: Molecular Biology Program and Biological Chemistry Program. Students are admitted by one of the programs and supported financially for their first year of graduate study. Independent laboratory research for not less than three years after the bachelor’s degree, preliminary written and oral examinations, and a written dissertation defended through an oral examination. No specific number of credit hours is required. Course work in departments related to the dissertation subject is suggested. New students become acquainted with the research program of various faculty members through laboratory rotations.
