The Mission of the Department of Mining Engineering is to prepare students for productive, lifelong careers in mining and related industries or disciplines; and to provide knowledge useful for producing the region’s mineral resources. Specifically, the Department will: Educate graduates to work in any area of the mining industry. Disseminate newly acquired knowledge via publication of original research. Provide professional service to the mining industry and public by assisting in the environmentally responsible and safe extraction of mineral resources. Inform the public at large about the importance of mining to society. Learning Outcomes Students will gain a quality education upon which they can build a secure future. Students will be educated in the fundamental and current issues in mining and related industries. Students will be able to analyze problems, design tests or experiments, evaluate information, and communicate results both individually and as teams. Students will gain a desire for lifelong learning and continuing education. Students will understand and appreciate the issues of worker safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental responsibility.

Admission Requirements

6.5+
All international graduate applicants to the University of Utah must meet the following minimum Graduate School requirements: A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. college or university or from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in their home country. The Office of International Admissions will determine if applicants with international degrees meet the Graduate School's requirement of a recognized bachelor's degree. At least a 3.0 or higher undergraduate weighted mean GPA on a 4.0 scale. If the undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, a GPA will be calculated for the last two years attended if schooling was done at a foreign institution, and based upon the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) if the student attended a U.S. institution. Other English Language Requirements: 550 on the TOEFL PBT (paper-based).
