Program Purpose The philosophy graduate program is dedicated to preparing graduates for a career in higher education. We provide training in logic or formal reasoning, and provide a broad introduction to the history of philosophical thought, and contemporary debates in value theory, epistemology and metaphysics. Our graduates are educated to be: successful in the profession of philosophy, including research, teaching and service; exceptionally prepared for research and teaching in the areas of bioethics and philosophy of science; able to effectively communicate and analyze arguments Learning Outcomes Ability to read and analyze philosophical texts, both contemporary and historical. (Evidence of learning will be GSQE) Broad background in the following philosophical areas: Ethics and Value Theory, Metaphysics, Epistemology and Philosophy of Science, History of Philosophy, Logic and Formal Methods. (Evidence of learning will be grades of B+ or better in courses (B for Logic and Formal Methods).) Mastery of subject matter content in areas of competence at a level supporting ability to teach undergraduate classes. (Evidence of learning will be B+ or better grades in courses.) Ability to develop extended written treatment of a philosophical problem. (Evidence of learning will be MS thesis)

Admission Requirements

6.5+
All international graduate applicants to the University of Utah must meet the following minimum Graduate School requirements: A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. college or university or from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in their home country. The Office of International Admissions will determine if applicants with international degrees meet the Graduate School's requirement of a recognized bachelor's degree. At least a 3.0 or higher undergraduate weighted mean GPA on a 4.0 scale. If the undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, a GPA will be calculated for the last two years attended if schooling was done at a foreign institution, and based upon the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) if the student attended a U.S. institution. Other English Language Requirements: 550 on the TOEFL PBT (paper-based).
