Program Purpose Graduates of the Master of Music in Composition will demonstrate advanced competencies in composition Learning Outcomes Students will demonstrate the competency to work in both acoustic and electronic media; work with a variety of forms, styles, and notations; and apply principles of scoring appropriate to the development of an individual musical voice. Students will demonstrate fluency in the use of tools needed by composers. This includes advanced analytical techniques, applicable technologies, and strong spoken and written language skills. Students will have opportunities to hear fully realized performances of their original compositions. Public presentation and critical assessment are essential experiences. Students will demonstrate excellence in composition. Students will demonstrate the specialized musical preparation, knowledge, and skills necessary to prepare for doctoral studies in composition and related fields. Students will demonstrate readiness for a professional career in composition by completing and presenting in live performance at least two major original compositions in a variety of media during the student's studies. Students will demonstrate the ability to present and discuss their work with peers in a clear, articulate manner.

Admission Requirements

6.5+
All international graduate applicants to the University of Utah must meet the following minimum Graduate School requirements: A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. college or university or from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in their home country. The Office of International Admissions will determine if applicants with international degrees meet the Graduate School's requirement of a recognized bachelor's degree. At least a 3.0 or higher undergraduate weighted mean GPA on a 4.0 scale. If the undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, a GPA will be calculated for the last two years attended if schooling was done at a foreign institution, and based upon the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) if the student attended a U.S. institution. Other English Language Requirements: 550 on the TOEFL PBT (paper-based).
