Would you also like to examine economic theory from the perspective of the philosophy of science? Are you fascinated by the problems of the Third World, post-Keynesian macroeconomics, Marxian economics, ecological economics, the economics of gender, labor market institutions, or Bayesian econometrics?

If so, then the Economics Ph.D. program at the University of Utah may be for you.

The Ph.D. program prepares students for professional careers in teaching, research, business, and government. The program provides a broad mastery of theoretical and applied fields of economics. Both orthodox and heterodox approaches to economics are integral parts of the program which includes a technically sophisticated presentation of economic theory and quantitative methods as well as a variety of fields of specialization, with a particular emphasis on cross-cutting themes of inequality, globalization, and sustainability. The department has approximately 30 Ph.D. students in residence and a faculty of 26 with Ph.D.s from leading universities across the U.S and Europe. The Economics Ph.D. program at the University of Utah is STEM-designated.

The requirements for admission to the PhD program are:

The completion of a bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited College or University
GPA of 3.0 or better or its equivalent
The successful completion of intermediate microeconomic and macroeconomic theory*
Sufficient preparation in mathematics through calculus, statistics, and linear algebra
Three academic reference letters
A brief statement of personal academic goals

A master's degree in economics is not a requirement for admission. The GRE is no longer a requirement for admission.
