The Ph.D. Program in the Department of Mathematics enjoys an excellent reputation in a diversified set of subjects, such as algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, differential geometry, geometric topology, group and representation theory, and number theory in pure areas, and materials and fluids, mathematical biology, mathematical finance, numerical analysis, partial differential equations, probability, and statistics in applied areas. The following is a list of departmental requirements, in addition to the requirements of the Graduate School, for candidates seeking a Ph.D. degree in mathematics. at least 42 credit hours numbered 6000 or above three written qualifying examinations an oral qualifying examination two semesters of teaching the final oral examination The course requirements for the Ph.D. degree consist of at least seven sequences (each sequence contains two consecutive courses on a subject) numbered 6000 or above, or their equivalent, approved by the student’s supervisory committee. They should include at least 14 credit hours of courses numbered 7800-7970 (topics courses, seminars, and thesis research). Exceptions must be approved on an individual basis by the Graduate Committee upon the recommendation by the student’s supervisory committee.

Admission Requirements

All international graduate applicants to the University of Utah must meet the following minimum Graduate School requirements: A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. college or university or from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in their home country. The Office of International Admissions will determine if applicants with international degrees meet the Graduate School's requirement of a recognized bachelor's degree. At least a 3.0 or higher undergraduate weighted mean GPA on a 4.0 scale. If the undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, a GPA will be calculated for the last two years attended if schooling was done at a foreign institution, and based upon the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) if the student attended a U.S. institution. Other English Language Requirements: 550 on the TOEFL PBT (paper-based).
