Our Ph.D. candidates take classes, serve as teaching assistants (TAs), and conduct original research. In your first semester, you will TA and take the core courses, the final exams of which constitute the Comprehensive Exam that must be passed to continue on in the program.  Coursework typically continues through your second year, focused on topics related to your research area.  An oral Qualifying Exam takes place by the end of your fifth semester, where you will present a talk on a research topic, placing it in context and typically describing a project you have been working on.  Your Ph.D. is complete after the successful defense of your dissertation, ideally in your fifth or sixth year in the program. More details about the graduate program can be found in the Graduate-Handbook.

Prior to joining the program, admitted students must have received a bachelor's degree from an accredited institute, college, or university.  Although no single field of undergraduate specialization is required, applicants to the Physics Ph.D. program must have a thorough undergraduate background in the sciences and are expected to have mastered basic material in physics and mathematics (calculus through differential equations). In addition, a background in astronomy, biology, or chemistry may be needed in preparation for the focus of the intended graduate studies.
