Program Purpose: The program prepares students to be broadly knowledgeable and proficient in the German language and its literary and cultural traditions, and to possess the necessary research and communication skills to participate in a variety of settings. Students should be equipped for a range of entry-level positions, where German language oral and written as well as cultural skills are necessary, or to pursue graduate study in an academic or professional program. Learning Outcomes Speak, listen, read and write in German on a broad range of topics. Throughout the program, the students' language competency should increase as they progress towards the degree. Proper placement of students through testing assures they begin their course work at their level of proficiency. Ability to communicate successfully in German-speaking countries through an understanding of the cultural differences and similarities between the student’s own and the target cultures. Ability to write in a variety of culturally appropriate genres, including coherent and well-organized essays with clear thesis statements and analytical argumentation. Awareness of fundamental concepts of major critical theories and the ability to apply these in the analysis of literary texts. Familiarity with a variety of culturally significant creative and expository texts, films, or other artifacts from major periods of German cultural history and the ability to discuss these works and their creators in their social, cultural, historical contexts.
