Students graduating with a Doctorate in Music Education Degree will develop advanced skills and knowledge in their areas of specialization. The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Music Education emphasizes the development of research skills and the skills necessary for a career in music teaching and learning at the highest level. Competencies include a broad knowledge of, and individual expertise in, contemporary practices in areas including music theory, music history, and performance; however, the Doctorate in Music Education Degree focuses specifically on music teaching and learning, research, and the communication and dissemination of knowledge. The doctoral degree program in Music Education emphasizes the preparation of music administrators, teachers, and researchers who are able to think abstractly, generalize knowledge, carry on research and apply research results to their own areas of specialization, and communicate effectively both orally and in written form. The program involves the scholarly study of the philosophical and psychological foundations of music education and the processes of teaching and learning music. Learning Outcomes The technical, cognitive, and creative skills that will enable them to use musical knowledge effectively; Professional competence in the communication and dissemination of knowledge; Potential to solve contemporary problems in various aspects of music. Skills that can be used to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information; Abilities to identify underlying assumptions in written materials and oral presentations; Knowledge, strategies, and skills for effective music advocacy; An in-depth knowledge of the historical, philosophical, sociological, psychological, and pedagogical foundations of music education; The ability to conduct qualitative and quantitative research in music education; Knowledge regarding teaching methodologies, learning styles, and teaching styles; Administrative knowledge sufficient to organize and maintain an effective graduate program in music education; Abilities necessary for planning and organizing presentations/workshops at music education conferences; and An understanding of how music education fits in with and is effected by contemporary educational issues. An in-depth knowledge of the historical, philosophical, sociological, psychological, and pedagogical foundations of music education. Students will demonstrate the advanced musical and pedagogical knowledge and research/writing skills necessary to enhance their teaching abilities at all levels. Students will demonstrate the competency to write professional papers and a dissertation appropriate for a doctorate degree and suitable for publication. Some of these written works should make an original contribution to the music education field. Graduates must also gain the skills and abilities to present and discuss their works with peers in a clear, articulate manner. Students will demonstrate the specialized musical preparation, knowledge, and skills necessary for an academic career in music education.

Admission Requirements

6.5+
All international graduate applicants to the University of Utah must meet the following minimum Graduate School requirements: A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. college or university or from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education in their home country. The Office of International Admissions will determine if applicants with international degrees meet the Graduate School's requirement of a recognized bachelor's degree. At least a 3.0 or higher undergraduate weighted mean GPA on a 4.0 scale. If the undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, a GPA will be calculated for the last two years attended if schooling was done at a foreign institution, and based upon the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) if the student attended a U.S. institution. Other English Language Requirements: 550 on the TOEFL PBT (paper-based).
