Our MSc program is for students who have an independent means of paying tuition and are not interested in a PhD, but rather seek to strengthen their professional expertise with our two-year program. Students will take courses that follow one of the four Plans of Study (https://www.physics.utah.edu/graduate-programs/gradforms/plan-of-study/). Students will have support from a three-person advising committee as they follow the classes associated with their chosen emphasis. Students will gain experience with a targeted research experience within our program, likely occurring during the second year of the program. Successful defense of your work in an oral exam in the fourth semester will constitute a completion of this program.

Prior to joining the program, admitted students must have received a bachelor's degree from an accredited institute, college, or university.  Although no single field of undergraduate specialization is required, applicants to the Physics Ph.D. program must have a thorough undergraduate background in the sciences and are expected to have mastered basic material in physics and mathematics (calculus through differential equations). In addition, a background in astronomy, biology, or chemistry may be needed in preparation for the focus of the intended graduate studies.
