Studying Biotechnology for a Greener and More Sustainable Future

Our Master’s degree in Biotechnology for the Bioeconomy (BforB) prepares professionals to drive innovation in sustainable production and green technologies. The programme focuses on leveraging plant and microbial systems to support a circular economy and reduce reliance on natural resources.

What You’ll Learn

Over the two years of the programme, you will learn to:

  • Harness plant and microbial systems to create innovative bio-based products
  • Design and optimise bioprocesses for renewable raw materials and waste valorisation
  • Develop eco-friendly strategies for bioremediation and environmental protection
  • Leverage waste biomass to produce bioenergy and biomaterials
  • Apply green chemistry to transform agri-food and industrial processes.
  • Master diagnostic tools for traceability and quality in food and other supply chains.

Why Choose our Master’s Degree in Biotechnology for the Bioeconomy

  • 100% taught in English
  • Top-notch education in a forward-looking and sustainability-driven field
  • To empower yourself to reimagine resources and drive the changes our planet needs.

Programme Structure

This is a two-year programme taught entirely in English and divided into four semesters.

The first year is devoted to a bulk of mandatory courses covering the essentials of biotechnologies and their applications in the circular economy. During the second year, students can tailor their study plan according to their interests, to gain additional expertise in specific topics such as functional foods and nutraceuticals, molecular traceability, bio-based food industry, biocatalysts etc.

Learning activities include lectures, practical laboratories, field visits and a final experimental project leading to the final thesis. The thesis project requires at least 6 months of full-time work in an R&D laboratory in Italy or abroad, under the guidance of a supervisor, and is usually scheduled in the second semester of the second year.

For further details, visit the University’s website.

Entry Qualification:

Undergraduate diploma (or higher)

A. Students with an Italian University Degree

Applicants to this Master’s degree programme are required to hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnologies (L-2).

Those holding a Bachelor’s degree in other degree classes are also eligible, provided they have earned at least 35 credits ( ECTS ) in the basic sciences covered by the degree programme (physics, general chemistry, biology etc.), and at least 25 ECTS in the “core disciplines” of the Bachelor’s degree class in Biotechnologies (L-2). A full list of these subjects is available on the University’s website.

B. Students with Non-Italian University Degrees

If you hold a foreign first-cycle degree (i.e. a Bachelor’s or other degree issued by a non-Italian higher education institution), the Admission Board will check your transcript of records to assess whether your first-cycle degree makes you eligible for admission.

As a general rule, the Admission Board seeks applicants with a first-cycle degree as close as possible to those required of graduates from Italian universities. In other words, your previous degree should include a consistent number of courses in basic sciences ( mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology ) and biotechnology-related subjects ( molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, plant physiology, organic chemistry and biochemistry, etc.). A full list of these subjects is available on the University’s website. Please note that the Admission Board may ask you to provide further documents to assess your prior academic studies, and even invite you to an online interview, should it deem it necessary.

All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application as soon as possible. Please bear in mind that reply times may vary depending on the number of applications received.

The entry qualification documents are accepted in the following languages: English / German / French / Spanish / Italian.

Please note that we only accept official translations (either issued by your former higher education institution or carried out by a certified or sworn translator).

Language Requirement:

English

A B2 or higher level of proficiency in English is required for admission.

How to Prove Your English Proficiency

  • If you have a language certificate accepted by the University, just attach it to your application for admission. Please note that the University accepts only certificates obtained in the last 3 years (2 years for TOEFL ).
  • If you don’t have a language certificate or if you are a native speaker, the University will send you an email and invite you to take an English entry test. The test is free of charge and can also be taken remotely.

If you miss or fail the English entry test, you will still have a chance to be cleared for admission, by submitting a B2 language certificate accepted by the University before the applicable deadline.
