Where Cutting Edge Biotechnology Meets Translational Medical Research

The Master’s degree in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine provides strong theoretical knowledge and advanced technical skills in applied biotechnology and translational medical research. Courses range from pathology and genetics to pharmacology and nanotechnology, offering students plenty of options to specialise in biotech applications for high-stakes medical fields like oncology, immunology and transplantation. The programme has a strong professional orientation, with most of the second year devoted to practical activities and lab research for the final thesis.

What You’ll Learn

Over the two years of the programme, you will learn to:

  • analyse the genetic and molecular bases of human diseases and their underlying pathophysiological mechanisms
  • develop innovative biotechnology-based diagnostic and therapeutic strategies
  • apply computational tools and bioinformatics to biomedical and translational research
  • design novel experimental models for the study of human diseases
  • familiarise yourself with cost analysis and business planning for the management of scientific research projects.

Why Choose Our Master’s Degree in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine

  • 100% taught in English
  • Opportunity to choose from five different specialisation tracks
  • Bilateral agreements for traineeships abroad
  • Strong focus on the practical applications of biomedical research

Programme Structure

The Master’s degree in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine is a two year programme organised into six terms and taught entirely in English.

The first and second terms consist of compulsory courses aimed at providing an in-depth understanding of the foundational areas of medical biotechnology. During the third term, students attend different courses depending on their chosen specialisation track (a.k.a. curriculum). Currently the programme offers five curricula :

  • neuroscience
  • medical and experimental oncology
  • molecular diagnostics for personalized medicine
  • experimental immunology and transplantations
  • advanced computation for human disease modelling

The fourth term delves deep into the socio-economic aspects of biotechnology and the core concepts of bioethics. The remainder of the fourth term and the fifth and sixth terms are devoted to practical activities in selected laboratories. During this period, students are expected to work on an original research project, which will be the main topic of their final thesis.

Attendance is mandatory for both lecture-based courses and practical activities.

For further details on the courses included in the programme, please visit the University’s website.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Master’s degree in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine stand out for their strong translational training, enabling them to bridge basic research and real-world biomedical applications, to develop innovative biomedical solutions.

Where Your Degree Can Take You

This degree prepares you for a wide range of professional roles, including but not limited to:

  • Medical Science Liaison ( MSL ) – establishing and maintaining contacts with clinicians on behalf of pharma and biotech companies to support the proper use of medical products
  • Clinical Monitor – coordinating and supervising clinical studies within pharmaceutical enterprises, contract research organisations ( CRO s) and hospitals
  • Market Access Manager – supporting biopharma companies, consulting agencies or regulatory bodies in facilitating and processing the approval of new therapies
  • Scientific Communication Advisor or Medical Writer – drafting patient communication, information leaflets and specialist articles for medical communication agencies and publishers
  • Research Scientist in public or private institutions – including opportunities to continue training through PhD programmes and postgraduate specialisation schools.

Entry Qualification:

Undergraduate diploma (or higher)

The programme accepts applications from Bachelor’s graduates who have obtained at least 50 ECTS credits in specific medicine-related subjects, which are listed on the University’s website.

If your Bachelor’s degree was obtained in a country that does not use the ECTS system, the Admission Board will check your transcript of records to assess whether your first-cycle degree certifies completion of an equivalent workload for the required subjects.

Selection Process for EU applicants

EU applicants will have to sit an online admission test consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions covering the fundamentals of biochemistry, biology, pharmacology, physics, genetics, immunology and pathology. The test will be in English, and the score obtained will form the basis of the selection process.

Selection Process for Non-EU Applicants Residing Outside Italy

Applicants who need a visa to study in Italy (i.e. non-EU applicants residing outside Italy) will not have to sit the admission test .

They will first be assessed on the basis of their academic curriculum. If they pass this first selection stage, they will be invited to a formal interview with the Admission Board, aimed at assessing their knowledge and understanding of the core disciplines required for admission (biochemistry, molecular biology, pathology etc.). The interview will be in English .

For all applicants : please note that there is a cap on the maximum number of students admitted. You are advised to carefully read the Call for Applications on the University’s website, as it contains detailed information on the number of places available, the content of the test/interview, and the selection steps.

The entry qualification documents are accepted in the following languages: English / German / French / Spanish / Italian.

Please note that we only accept official translations (either issued by your former higher education institution or carried out by a certified or sworn translator).

Language Requirements:

English

A B2 or higher level of proficiency in English is required for admission.

How to Prove Your English Proficiency

  • If you have a language certificate accepted by the University, just attach it to your application for admission. Please note that the University accepts only certificates obtained in the last 3 years (2 years for TOEFL ).
  • If you don’t have a language certificate or if you are a native speaker, the University will send you an email and invite you to take an English entry test. The test is free of charge and can also be taken remotely.

If you miss or fail the English entry test, you will still have a chance to be cleared for admission, by submitting a B2 language certificate accepted by the University before the applicable deadline.
