Shape the Future of Chemistry: Master Sustainability, Innovation and Global Expertise!
Our Master’s degree in Sustainable Industrial Chemistry is a two-year programme designed to train professionals with advanced expertise in industrial chemical sciences and technologies with a focus on sustainability, innovation, and environmental responsibility. Entirely taught in English, the programme combines theoretical knowledge with extensive laboratory practice and research, preparing graduates for high-level roles in industry, research, and development. Certified by the ECTN EuroMaster® Label, this degree guarantees adherence to European standards and offers international mobility opportunities through Erasmus+ and global partnerships.
What You’ll Learn
Upon completion of the programme, you will be able to:
- Design and optimise chemical processes and plants with a view to improving environmental and economic sustainability
- Conduct Techno Economic Analysis ( TEA ) and Life-Cycle Assessment ( LCA ) to quantify the economic and environmental impacts of a technology, product or process
- Carry out laboratory tests and trials for the development of new products, formulations and materials, applying innovative synthesis methods and advanced characterisation techniques
- Improve the sustainability footprint of industrial processes
- Use computational tools for in-silico design and the creation of digital twins for process modelling
- Leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions to analyse experimental data, plan new experiments and optimise industrial processes and operations.
Why Choose our Master’s degree in Sustainable Industrial Chemistry
- International Recognition : the programme is taught entirely in English and holds the ECTN EuroMaster® Label, ensuring compliance with European standards
- Focus on Sustainability : emphasis on green technologies, circular economy principles and reducing environmental impact
- Hands-On Experience : extensive laboratory work and research projects to prepare for real-world challenges
- Global Mobility : Opportunities for Erasmus+ exchanges and collaborations with international institutions.
Programme Structure
The master’s degree programme in Sustainable Industrial Chemistry is structured over two years. Learning activities include lecture-based courses, numerical and laboratory exercises and activities, seminars and conferences, group meetings and much more.
During the first semester of the first year, students attend compulsory courses (Advanced Industrial Chemistry with Lab, Chemical Processes and Industrial Plants, Economics and Management) that are intended to provide them with the foundational knowledge necessary to tackle more specific subjects. In the second semester, they can tailor their studies by choosing specialist courses from a wide range of electives.
The second year is mostly devoted to the internship (15 ECTS ) and the final thesis laboratory (24 ECTS ), for which students must work on an original industrial chemistry research project under the guidance of a supervisor. Both the internship and the thesis laboratory can be carried out at the University of Milan or at other institutions, for example chemistry labs of partner universities or non-profit research centres, also abroad.

Admission Requirements
Entry Qualification:
Undergraduate diploma (or higher)
During their Bachelor’s, all applicants must have earned at least 90 credits ( ECTS ) in certain basic subjects covered by the degree programme, more specifically:
• at least 20 ECTS in fields related to mathematics, physics and information technology
• at least 70 ECTS in chemistry-related subjects (analytical, physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, environmental and biological chemistry, industrial chemistry, etc.).
For further details on the ECTS required, please visit the University’s website
The Admission Board will review each applicant’s Transcript of Records to make sure that they meet the above-mentioned minimum requirements.
Applicants meeting the requirements will then be invited to an online interview with the Admission Board. The interview is aimed at testing the applicants’ background knowledge of chemistry-related topics and passing it is a prerequisite for admission.
The entry qualification documents are accepted in the following languages: English / German / French / Spanish / Italian.
Please note that we only accept official translations (either issued by your former higher education institution or carried out by a certified or sworn translator).
Language Requirement:
English
A B2 or higher level of proficiency in English is required for admission.
How to Prove Your English Proficiency
• If you have a language certificate accepted by the University, just attach it to your application for admission. Please note that the University accepts only certificates obtained in the last 3 years (2 years for TOEFL ).
• If you don’t have a language certificate or if you are a native speaker, the University will send you an email and invite you to take an English placement test. The test is free of charge and can also be taken remotely.
If you miss or fail the English entry test, you will still have a chance to be cleared for admission, by submitting a B2 language certificate accepted by the University before the applicable deadline.
