Through its wide range of courses, students gain advanced skills in molecular biotechnology, computational biology and bioinformatics, with a strong focus on the most advanced tools and approaches for the analysis of genomes, proteomes and metabolomes. The programme is taught entirely in English, providing graduates with a competitive edge in the global job market.

What You’ll Learn

By the end of the programme, you will have acquired:

  • a deep understanding of the physicochemical properties of macromolecules, the relationship between their structure, function and dynamics, and techniques for characterising enzymes.
  • expertise in omics technologies and bioinformatics, including R programming
  • techniques for characterising genes, their products and interactions.

In terms of practical skills, you will be able to:

  • analyse and interpret macromolecular data from X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy
  • employ microscopy, spectroscopy, nanotechnology and biosensors for innovative diagnostics and molecular interaction studies
  • apply experimental techniques for gene regulation, silencing and engineering to innovate in biomedicine, plant biotechnology and parasite disease control
  • identify molecular markers and implement breeding strategies to enhance plant varieties
  • engineer plants and algae to produce valuable industrial and environmental compounds.

Why Choose Our Master’s Degree in Molecular Biotechnology and Bioinformatics

  • 100% taught in English
  • Interdisciplinary expertise combining molecular biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics and data science
  • Access to advanced labs and innovative projects

Programme Structure

Our Master’s degree in Molecular Biotechnology and Bioinformatics is structured over two years. The programme includes lectures, intense laboratory activities and an experimental thesis project (37 ECTS ).

In the first year, students gain a strong theoretical and practical foundation in biotechnology core disciplines, taking 8 compulsory courses (56 ECTS in total). Another 12 ECTS are devoted to elective courses, which can be taken either in the first or in the second year.

A significant portion of the second year is dedicated to the lab training period and experimental thesis, for which students will work in cutting-edge research laboratories, either at our University or another Italian or international partner institution.

For further details and the full list of courses included in the programme, please visit the University’s website

Career Guide

Graduates in Molecular Biotechnology and Bioinformatics will be equipped to work across various fields as biologists, biochemists, biophysicists and biotechnologists, while also managing the ethical, technical and legal aspects of their work.

Where Your Degree Can Take You

Everywhere! Literally, you could work all over the world for:

  • R&D and quality control laboratories of pharmaceutical, chemical and agri-food companies
  • Environmental biotechnology services
  • Genomics and proteomics research laboratories of public and private institutions.

Entry Qualification:

Undergraduate diploma (or higher)

A. Students with an Italian University Degree

Applicants to this Master’s degree programme are required to hold a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology (L-2).

Those holding a Bachelor’s degree in other degree classes are also eligible, provided they have earned at least 60 ECTS in biotechnology-related subjects (biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, etc). For a full list of these subjects, please visit the University’s website

B. Students with non-Italian University Degrees

If you hold a foreign first-cycle degree (i.e. a Bachelor’s or other degree issued by a non-Italian higher education institution), the Admission Board will check your transcript of records to assess whether your first-cycle degree makes you eligible for admission.
As a general rule, the Admission Board is looking for applicants with a first-cycle degree as close as possible to those required of graduates from Italian universities. This means that you are expected to have adequate knowledge in all the following areas: biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science and statistics.

Please note that the Admission Board may ask you to provide further documents to assess your prior academic studies, and even invite you to an online interview, should it deem it necessary.

All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application as soon as possible. Please bear in mind that reply times may vary depending on the number of applications received.

The entry qualification documents are accepted in the following languages: English / German / French / Spanish / Italian.

Please note that we only accept official translations (either issued by your former higher education institution or carried out by a certified or sworn translator).

Language Requirements:

English

A B2 or higher level of proficiency in English is required for admission.

How to prove your English proficiency

  • If you have a language certificate accepted by the University, just attach it to your application for admission. Please note that the University accepts only certificates obtained in the last 3 years (2 years for TOEFL ).
  • If you don’t have a language certificate or if you are a native speaker, the University will send you an email and invite you to take an English entry test. The test is free of charge and can also be taken remotely.

If you miss or fail the English entry test, you will still have a chance to be cleared for admission, by submitting a B2 language certificate accepted by the University before the applicable deadline.
