The Master's Degree Course in Sciences for the Conservation and Diagnostics of Cultural Heritage aims to train experts with a solid interdisciplinary background, able to operate with excellence in the field of conservation and diagnostics of cultural heritage.
This program provides an in-depth and up-to-date knowledge of the techniques of scientific investigation of cultural heritage, starting from the acquisition phase of diagnostic data up to their application in conservation studies, even in complex contexts. Students will acquire advanced skills on the characteristics, properties and degradation processes of the constituent materials of cultural heritage and materials used for restoration. They will also be trained on the methods of archaeometry and applied metrology, on the interactions between environment and cultural heritage, and on the chemical-physical properties of restoration and conservation materials.
At the end of the course of study, graduates will have to demonstrate a mastery of the scientific method of investigation and diagnostic techniques, necessary for the design and identification of the most suitable procedures for the recovery and conservation of cultural heritage, including naturalistic ones. They will also be able to operate in complex realities, participating in territorial protection initiatives that include cultural heritage, in projects for the protection and development of places of conservation, supporting restoration interventions, recognition of the historical-artistic, monumental and archaeological heritage, and preventive archaeology activities.
The course provides an in-depth knowledge of modern analysis and survey instruments, statistical and computer techniques for the analysis and archiving of data relating to cultural heritage. The advanced scientific preparation of graduates includes the characteristics, properties and degradation processes of the constituent materials of cultural heritage, as well as aspects related to natural heritage. They will also be trained in advanced scientific knowledge relating to archaeometric and geoarchaeological applications, to the problems of the conservation of museum cultural heritage and to the characteristics and problems of the conservation and diagnosis of information carriers.
The course aims to train "Conservation Scientists" with an interdisciplinary preparation that includes experts in diagnostics and technology applied to historical-artistic, archaeological, architectural, museum and information media cultural heritage. These professionals will be able to design and coordinate multi-analytical diagnostic campaigns and to collaborate with other specialists to address the complex problems related to the conservation and prevention of the degradation of cultural heritage.
Graduates will be able to deal with the design and management of diagnostic interventions, with particular attention to the identification of methods, materials, measures and techniques for the recovery, conservation and restoration of historical-artistic, archaeological, museum cultural heritage and information supports. In addition, they will be able to design diagnostic protocols for the conservation of cultural heritage in each of the categories provided, also in relation to the reference procedures and good practices in use. They will contribute to the design and organization of museums, archaeological parks, exhibitions and cultural events, and will collaborate in the creation of information systems for the processing of data relating to cultural heritage.
The teaching activities are divided into lectures, exercises, laboratories, seminars, practical activities in the field, construction sites, laboratories and museums, free courses and degree theses carried out in university facilities and/or outside at qualified bodies, museums, protection bodies.
In accordance with the aims of the course, the training course includes disciplines specifically dedicated to mediation and didactic communication, as well as business economics.
In compliance with the principles of European harmonisation, the competences developed by graduates, in terms of expected learning outcomes, meet the specific requirements of the Dublin descriptor system.
