The Degree Course aims to train a professional figure with technical-semeiological skills of the motor and sensory functions of vision. Graduates in the Degree Course in Orthoptics and Ophthalmological Assistance, in accordance with the guidelines of the European Community, must be equipped with :

  • knowledge of organs and systems, as well as knowledge of the psychological, social and environmental dimensions;
  • knowledge of the evolution of the profession, of the founding concepts of orthoptics and ophthalmology;
  • knowledge of the foundations, evolution and characteristics of the theory and conceptual models of assistance and rehabilitation;
  • knowledge of the principles and rules that define the field of activity and responsibility of the orthoptist;
  • knowledge of the bioethical, deontological, legal and medico-legal principles of the profession;
  • the ability to develop an integrated approach to the patient, critically evaluating the clinical, relational, educational, social and ethical aspects involved in diagnosis, prevention, assistance, rehabilitation;
  • the cultural and professional principles that guide the diagnostic and rehabilitative process towards the patients, applying these principles in experiences in accredited health and assistance structures;
  • a level of professional, decision-making and operational autonomy deriving from a training course characterized by a global approach to ophthalmological problems also in relation to the social environment that surrounds them; - essential theoretical knowledge deriving from the basic sciences, with a view to their subsequent professional application;
  • knowledge, skills and experience useful for planning, managing and evaluating orthotic and rehabilitative care intervention;
  • knowledge, skills and experience to ensure the correct application of diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions;
  • the ability to participate directly in updating their professional profile;
  • the methodology and culture necessary for the practice of ongoing formation;
  • the ability to collaborate and integrate with the various professional figures in group healthcare activities;
  • the ability to make use, where necessary, of the collaboration and work of support staff and to contribute to its training;
  • the teaching capacity oriented towards the clinical tutoring of the students;
  • knowledge of the ethical and historical dimensions of medicine with particular reference to the orthotic-ophthalmological and rehabilitation disciplines;
  • the ability to relate and communicate effectively and adequately with the patient and his family;
  • the knowledge necessary for understanding the biological, pathophysiological and sensory phenomena of vision;
  • the ability to identify treatments for the prevention and rehabilitation of visual impairments;
  • the ability to perform ophthalmological instrumental techniques;
  • the ability to develop the professional skills defined by their profile and provided for by EU and Italian legislation;
  • knowledge for the purposes of preparing health professionals capable of carrying out activities aimed at prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and functional assessment procedures with ownership;
  • the ability to understand the skills derived from learning semeiological techniques, complex assessment of the visual function and rehabilitative treatment of visual handicaps in various biological ages;
  • the ability to carry out health education interventions aimed at the prevention and rehabilitation of amblyopia and visual impairments;
  • the ability to interact and actively collaborate with interprofessional teams in order to plan and share evaluative and rehabilitative interventions of the multi-disabled;
  • specific skills in ophthalmic care in the operating room;
  • teaching skills to collaborate in the training of students in the context of the three-year degree course.
