With degrees at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels, the music education area seeks to prepare students to become music educators of the highest professional caliber by offering a comprehensive curriculum based on cutting-edge research, providing ongoing mentorship from engaged faculty, and involving students in hands-on school-based learning throughout their academic experience.
Undergraduate music education majors choose instrumental or choral music as areas of emphases. Because many prospective graduate students work full-time as music educators, the School of Music offers masters and PhD music education degree programs that may be completed after school hours or during the summers, as well as flexible degree structures designed to meet a variety of student interests and areas of expertise.
Graduate students in music education have great flexibility in selecting their course work, with up to 12 credit hours of electives. Students can choose courses from a variety of areas within the School of Music, including applied lessons and ensembles. The MM is a two-year, 32 credit hour program consisting of bibliography, music history and literature, advanced music theory, music education and other music courses. Either a master’s project or thesis is required.

To be considered for admission to the MM in Music Education, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements: 1. Hold a Bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited institution. a. Exceptions are rare and require the applicant to seek an Exception to Graduate Admission Policy. Please email [email protected] for more information. 2. Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all previous collegiate work. 3. International applicants must meet university English proficiency requirements. The School of Music requires higher scores on the TOEFL and IELTS exams. a. TOEFL: 85 composite score, with a minimum score of 20 in each category b. IELTS: 6.5 band score, with a minimum of 6.0 in each category. 4. Have teacher certification in music from Utah or any other state OR be accepted into the music teacher certification program at the University of Utah. Complete the following steps to apply to the MM: 1. Submit the online Graduate Admissions application. As part of this application MM applicants need to upload: a. Transcripts of course work from all schools attended. b. Three letters of recommendation from professors, employers, and/or other professionals qualified to judge the applicant’s ability to successfully complete graduate studies. c. Statement of Purpose, including future goals. d. An academic writing sample e. A high-quality video of your teaching in any setting (10-20 minutes in length). The teaching video can be uploaded directly on the application. However, should you run into issues, a YouTube link should be sent to [email protected]. 2. You may be asked to interview with the music education faculty. Note: Applicant’s application will be reviewed by a committee of faculty members within the music education area.
