Applicants to the graduate program in the Department of Chemical Engineering must meet the following requirements:
  • Bachelors Degree:  Applicants must have a Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Applicants whose undergraduate degree is not in chemical engineering are expected to be able to demonstrate proficiency in chemical engineering concepts equivalent to those of a chemical engineering graduate.
  • GPA:  A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is required for an application to be evaluated.
  • GRE Test (Optional):  The GRE is no longer required for MS admissions to the Department of Chemical Engineering. However, applicants are still encouraged to submit GRE scores if available. A quantitative score of 160 or higher is recommended.
  • English Proficiency Requirements:  International applicants are required to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo test. The University of Utah requires a minimum TOEFL score of 80 iBT (550 pBT), a minimum IELTS band score of 6.5, or a minimum Duolingo score of 105 for an application to be evaluated. The Department of Chemical Engineering looks favorably upon applicants with a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 96 (590 pBt; 7 IELTS). International students that have received a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited institution in the United States, Canada (except Quebec), the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand are not required to take the above listed English proficiency exams.
