General objective:

Train researchers capable of developing research projects in Psychology , under the direction of a senior researcher, adapting existing models and theories to address novel problems. These projects will attend to regional, national and international social problems, and that, at the same time, generate information that can be applied to projects of intervention and evaluation of social programs.

Specific objectives:

  • Develop, in students, scientific research skills and competencies in the search for behavioral solutions to social problems.
  • Develop in students the ability to adapt psychological models and theories to the explanation of social problems not addressed with those models and theories.
  • Train students in the management of data collection techniques and methods, analysis strategies and interpretation of results in psychological research, as well as tactics for integrating scientific knowledge.
  • Develop skills to implement, improve and evaluate research projects in psychology, aimed at satisfying information demands for the solution of social problems.
  • Promote interdisciplinary research between behavioral sciences and other areas of the social, biological and human sciences, establishing the bases for their integration as complex knowledge, linking related areas such as those that are cultivated in the university environment.

Application Requirements:

  • Have a bachelor's degree in Psychology or any other area related to the social, biological or human sciences. Interns may be accepted with a degree commitment letter; the period to present the degree will not exceed six months from the date of commencement of postgraduate courses.
  • Have passed with an average equal to or greater than 80 the subjects of their undergraduate study plan.
  • Pass the CENEVAL Postgraduate Entrance Examination ( EXANI--‐III ) with a minimum score of 1000.
  • Accredit English exam equivalent to TOEFL with 420 points.
  • Have an intermediate or advanced level in the management of word processors, spreadsheets, software for the preparation of presentations and strategies for the discriminated search of information on the Internet.
  • Submit a general research proposal in one of the three lines of generation and application of knowledge promoted by the Postgraduate course.
  • Conduct an interview with the Academic Committee.

At undergraduate level, the Mexican Universidad de Sonora (UNISON) offers 55 bachelor’s degrees, including:

Admissions and costs

Undergraduate entry requirements include a high school diploma, a filled in application form, passing the admissions tests and proof of your proficiency in English. Keep in mind, you’ll also need a passport, student visa and health insurance to enter the country.

Tuition fees at undergraduate level include a MX$1,860 enrollment fee (≈US$89) and tuition is based on the number of courses a student takes per semester and their average grade from their previous semester, starting at MX$1,520 (≈US$72) per course. Depending on your grades, though, you may be eligible for a tuition fee reduction of up to 100%.

The cost of living in Hermosillo, where the university is situated, should be no more than US$700 a month, including accommodation, groceries, and transportation, though of course this figure can vary depending on the type of the accommodation you seek (whether a hotel or flatshare).

Based in Hermosillo, Mexico, the Universidad de Sonora (UNISON) offers 14 PhD programs, 33 master’s degrees and 7 certificates, including:

Costs, scholarships and admissions

To be eligible for postgraduate study, you would need a bachelor's degree, a GPA of 8.0, proof of your proficiency in Spanish and English (with a TOEFL score of 450), the GRE subject test (depending on the course), two letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a research proposal (only for PhDs).

UNISON offers all students with an average grade of somewhere between 80 and 85 a tuition fee reduction of 50% in their second semester.  This figure can rise up to 100% depending on their grade.

Students can also apply for a CONACYT scholarship for a monthly stipend of approximately MX$13,769 (≈US$770), provided they have a GPA of 8.0.
