General objective:

To train language professionals capable of: understanding the internal characteristics of natural languages ​​and the phenomena related to their use; knowing how to differentiate and being able to obtain different types of linguistic evidence, both from the oral language (spontaneous speech, dialogues, narratives, etc.) of children and adults, and from written sources (historical documents, contemporary printed texts, etc.); apply transcription procedures and analysis techniques to these materials that allow them to identify the normal and abnormal patterns of the phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic structuring of languages, as well as to discover possible changes that they are experiencing.

Specific objectives:

The linguistic training acquired through the degree program and its areas of accentuation will enable the student to address and analyze linguistic phenomena of a different nature and in different types of communities (social and geographical), in such a way that their results provide knowledge about said phenomena. phenomena and also serve as a basis for proposing solutions to practical problems related to language, particularly those that arise in the field of regular and special education and also in bilingual education.

The training will be oriented, consequently, not only to the knowledge of the linguistic phenomenon itself, but to the application of said knowledge through a disciplinary and interdisciplinary orientation that will balance theory and practice, promoting attitudes of social awareness and teamwork, of so that the graduate is able to perform activities such as the following:

  • Participate in the design of programs for teaching communication skills (speaking, reading, writing, understanding) in Spanish and other languages.
  • Prepare basic manuals and teaching aids for teaching these skills both to speakers of Spanish as their mother tongue and to people who learn it as a second language.
  • Contribute to the preparation of general dictionaries of Spanish and other languages.
  • Develop basic descriptive and lexicographical products such as vocabularies and grammatical sketches.
  • Work implementing or advising educational projects oriented to language issues.
  • Collaborate in research projects focused on the description and analysis of specific languages, in the study of the processes of acquisition, development and teaching of the mother tongue and second languages, carrying out linguistic surveys, sampling of linguistic uses, and processing information relevant to said projects .
  • Apply linguistic knowledge to practical problems related to the processes of acquisition, development and teaching of Spanish and the indigenous languages ​​of the region, taking into account both their oral and written dimensions, and the possible disorders that can hinder said processes.
  • Teach communication skills in their mother tongue (be it Spanish or another) at the initial, intermediate and advanced levels of the educational system.

Admissions and costs

Undergraduate entry requirements include a high school diploma, a filled in application form, passing the admissions tests and proof of your proficiency in English. Keep in mind, you’ll also need a passport, student visa and health insurance to enter the country.

Tuition fees at undergraduate level include a MX$1,860 enrollment fee (≈US$89) and tuition is based on the number of courses a student takes per semester and their average grade from their previous semester, starting at MX$1,520 (≈US$72) per course. Depending on your grades, though, you may be eligible for a tuition fee reduction of up to 100%.

The cost of living in Hermosillo, where the university is situated, should be no more than US$700 a month, including accommodation, groceries, and transportation, though of course this figure can vary depending on the type of the accommodation you seek (whether a hotel or flatshare).

Costs, scholarships and admissions

To be eligible for postgraduate study, you would need a bachelor's degree, a GPA of 8.0, proof of your proficiency in Spanish and English (with a TOEFL score of 450), the GRE subject test (depending on the course), two letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a research proposal (only for PhDs).

UNISON offers all students with an average grade of somewhere between 80 and 85 a tuition fee reduction of 50% in their second semester.  This figure can rise up to 100% depending on their grade.

Students can also apply for a CONACYT scholarship for a monthly stipend of approximately MX$13,769 (≈US$770), provided they have a GPA of 8.0.
