General objective:

  • Train professionals in the teaching of English as a foreign language who, in addition to mastering their mother tongue, achieve an advanced level of comprehension and production, both oral and written, of English, and have psycho-pedagogical, linguistic and sociocultural knowledge that enables them to plan, design, implement and evaluate educational programs and processes aimed at learning the English language in school contexts at the basic, upper secondary and higher education levels.
  • To train professionals in the teaching of English as a foreign language who have initial training in one of the three fields of specialization related to the teaching of English as a foreign language that are listed below: bilingual education, use of information technologies and of communication in the teaching of a foreign language, or English for specific purposes. With this specialized training, professional development possibilities will open up that will allow you to connect with other professional fields where knowledge of English and its teaching are essential.
Specific objectives:

  • Provide the student with the knowledge required to achieve a complete mastery of the comprehension and production of English and Spanish. Also provide you with the cultural, political and social knowledge to understand the contexts where both Spanish and English are developed and used, allowing you to obtain a complete command of both languages ​​as well as contrasting skills in both their linguistic and cultural aspects.
  • Provide it with the theoretical and practical elements related to the process of learning a foreign language, both in its pedagogical and linguistic aspects. It is intended that the student knows and applies different techniques and methodological and pedagogical approaches to the teaching/learning of English as a foreign language and that he is able to evaluate and apply them to the concrete reality where he carries out his professional activity, for the resolution of specific problems in his field.
  • Train him for the design of study plans and educational materials in specialized curricular programs in the teaching of English as a foreign language. It is sought that they can design study plans and programs as well as didactic material for the teaching of English according to realities and specific needs and that they can evaluate the results objectively and critically.
  • Initiate you in research activities on the teaching of English as a foreign language. The student will thus be able to participate in research projects, both in the area of ​​teaching/learning English and in those of an interdisciplinary nature that require experience and knowledge of applied linguistics.
  • Train him in the use of information and communication technologies applied to education, in particular, those used in the teaching systems of English as a foreign language.
  • Initiate the professional in an area of ​​specialization that allows him to link with alternate professional fields where the knowledge he has acquired is essential.

Admissions and costs

Undergraduate entry requirements include a high school diploma, a filled in application form, passing the admissions tests and proof of your proficiency in English. Keep in mind, you’ll also need a passport, student visa and health insurance to enter the country.

Tuition fees at undergraduate level include a MX$1,860 enrollment fee (≈US$89) and tuition is based on the number of courses a student takes per semester and their average grade from their previous semester, starting at MX$1,520 (≈US$72) per course. Depending on your grades, though, you may be eligible for a tuition fee reduction of up to 100%.

The cost of living in Hermosillo, where the university is situated, should be no more than US$700 a month, including accommodation, groceries, and transportation, though of course this figure can vary depending on the type of the accommodation you seek (whether a hotel or flatshare).

Costs, scholarships and admissions

To be eligible for postgraduate study, you would need a bachelor's degree, a GPA of 8.0, proof of your proficiency in Spanish and English (with a TOEFL score of 450), the GRE subject test (depending on the course), two letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a research proposal (only for PhDs).

UNISON offers all students with an average grade of somewhere between 80 and 85 a tuition fee reduction of 50% in their second semester.  This figure can rise up to 100% depending on their grade.

Students can also apply for a CONACYT scholarship for a monthly stipend of approximately MX$13,769 (≈US$770), provided they have a GPA of 8.0.
