Faculty of Sciences

Geology Department

The Geology department at the Faculty of sciences, Alasmarya Islamic University offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology. It was established in 10/8/2015. The program has 133 units which are divided over 54 courses. Students are required to complete at least 8 semesters to graduate. 37 students graduated from this program up to this year over 8 graduating batches .

About the program

It is one of the educational programs at the Faculty of Science at Alasmarya University, which is concerned with studying the rocks, minerals, and various materials that formed the Earth and the processes related to them over time, and employing scientific tools and combined techniques to know the approximate ages of the rocks present on the Earth and in its interior, and using this information to determine the history of the Earth, and the changes it has undergone. This science is used to serve society in many fields, including:

            • For natural resources: Geology is used to determine the locations of natural resources in             the ground, such as oil, oil, and natural gas, which are among the most important         resources that fuel the economy and development of countries.

            • Mining: Many precious metals are extracted from the ground based on geology, and the most important of these riches are precious stones such as diamonds, rubies, and various           minerals.

            • Engineering: Geology is employed in the field of civil engineering, as engineers seek                 help from geotechnists to conduct various checks before carrying out projects,   especially large ones   such as constructing dams, tunnels, and huge buildings, in order to determine the appropriate layers for different constructions.

            • Water issues: Hydrology, which is part of the science of geology, is used to determine the             locations of groundwater, which provides a supply of safe water, in addition to monitoring             pollution processes in underground wells, and studying rainfall amounts.

Goals of the Program

1- Explaining the principles of geology, the basics of the Earth’s origin, and some other scientific foundations necessary for this specialization.

2- Providing information about the Earth’s geological history and the chronology of geological events.

3- Familiarity with and identification of the different types of microfossils and their chronology.

4- Analyzing well narratives and evaluating the geological formation in terms of the types of fluids containing them and their properties Petrophysics of the rock structure, as well as studying the characteristics of groundwater reservoirs.

5- Describe the different types of minerals and rocks, how they are formed, their properties, and methods of exploration.

6- Knowing the different types of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and explaining their presence and characteristics.

An overview of the professional fields of program graduates
