The Faculty of Marine Resources at Alasmarya Islamic University holds the Scientific Department of Marine Geology, offering an impact program established on April 15, 2010. This program, consisting of 136 units across 53 courses, requires a minimum of 8 years or semesters for graduation and has successfully produced 36 graduates.

The significance of marine geology lies in its exploration of the seas and oceans as crucial sources of natural resources. These vast basins harbor diverse habitats of environmental, social, and economic importance. The program focuses on preserving the marine environment, optimizing its economic and recreational potential, and conducting essential scientific research. The submerged basins of seas and oceans provide invaluable information related to plate tectonics and the sedimentary record of geological history. Furthermore, these marine expanses conceal substantial economic wealth, including minerals, oil, and gas.

Libya, strategically positioned along the Mediterranean Sea, holds immense potential for marine mineral resources, oil, and gas. This program addresses the critical role of Libya in the global context, emphasizing its significance for industrialized nations.

The objectives of the Marine Geology Department are multifaceted. Firstly, the division aims to prepare scientific competencies and specialized national cadres capable of excelling in the field of marine geology across its various branches. Secondly, it undertakes scientific studies and research to address practical and technical challenges within the field. Additionally, the division focuses on studying marine geological features in Libyan waters, contributing to the sustainable exploitation of economic wealth stored in the sea without harming the marine environment.

Program graduates find diverse opportunities in professional fields, including roles in the National Oil Corporation within offshore oil fields. They contribute to research centers such as the Libyan Oil Institute, Industrial Research Center, and Energy Research Center. Graduates also play vital roles in prospecting and exploration companies for economic raw materials, including cement factories. The expertise of program graduates extends to consulting offices, and they also serve as faculty members and trainers in universities, academies, colleges, and maritime institutes. Moreover, they contribute to the tourism and antiquities sector.
