Department of Sharia
The Department of Sharia, Faculty of Sharia and Law, Alasmarya Islamic University offers a License in Sharia. The program has 164 units and 69 courses (67 core courses and two electives -out of four), and requires a minimum of 9 semesters of study for graduation. Thirty-nine batches of students have been enrolled in the program and there are 653 graduates.
The Program was established in 1996 under decree No. 257. The Department of Sharia is one of the departments in the Faculty of Sharia and Law and is the first stepping stone the faculty. The department was launched when the Alasmarya Islamic University was established under decree No. 257 in 1996.
The Faculty of Sharia and Law had the Department of Sharia in 2004 when the departments in the university were expanded into colleges under the decree No. 260 on Jan.27.2004. When it was launched, the department adopted the annual system and later changed to the open semester system. The department was -and continues to be- a distinguished institution that disseminates Islamic culture and civilization.
The program goals can be summarized as follows: First, preparing highly qualified graduates who possess deep Islamic thought and capable of meeting the society needs through making the link between theory and application. Second, promoting and implanting Islamic concepts and values in the society in a way that develops balanced personalities that uphold humanitarian values and combine originality and modernity. Third, providing scientific and legitimate solutions for emerging issues and developments in various areas. Fourth, developing scientific research and improving its means through conducting various research projects that could lead to solutions to various issues in the Muslim society. Fifth, organizing seminars and conferences specializing in laws and regulations related to Islamic jurisprudence; suggesting solutions and making relevant improvements on them. Last, strengthening connections and scientific cooperation among Sharia’s departments and colleges.
Graduates can pursue jobs in a number of areas. For example, they can hold position in the fields of advocacy and judiciary. Graduates can also work as Imams, preachers and/or missionaries. Moreover, graduate can take positions in higher and public education, in private and public schools and in institutes and universities. Graduates can pursue jobs in rehabilitation centers, addiction treatment centers, prisons, and similar facilities. In addition, graduates can take positions in organizations concerned with organizing the society, religious guidance and calling to Allah; for example, Fatwa Council and Ministry of Religious Endowments. Graduates can also pursue job opportunities in financial supervision in Islamic financial institutions and banks. Graduates can also seek positions in civil institutions aiming at spreading Islam and teaching Quran as well as community services like dispute resolution and Sharia-based arbitration.
