Master in Global Politics and Transpacific Studies

The Master's Degree in Global Politics and Trans-Pacific Studies (GP&TPS) is a graduate program offered in Mexico by the University of Guadalajara with a global perspective that focuses on trans-Pacific studies. The program offers three specializations focused on the most relevant actors in the Asia-Pacific region: China, Japan and North America. The main objective is the training of global human resources with skills to interact in multicultural societies and who contribute to the knowledge of the complex political, social and economic relationships of the global environment, as well as to the solution of local problems from a global perspective.
 
International economic and political uncertainty since the 2008 global financial crisis has left Mexico, like many other nations, exposed to complex economic challenges. Greater economic and diplomatic diversification, to improve relations beyond Mexico's traditional focus on its ties with the United States, could help strengthen the country's economy and increase its international influence, especially in the face of the current protectionist wave that is emerging in the United States.

In this sense, global politics and its formal and informal institutions, such as the United Nations and the Group of Twenty (G20), constitute a broader multilateral context to enhance Mexico's influence in international diplomacy and economic governance. Global and trans-Pacific contexts involve many of the same international actors and processes, in areas such as foreign direct investment, foreign exchange markets and trade. The economic and political context of international relations in the 21st century has been characterized by the growing influence of Asia-Pacific nations. This has been driven primarily by the growth of the region's economic and political capabilities, especially in China and South Korea in East Asia, as well as in the countries that make up the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). acronym in English). These states followed the emergence of Japan in the late 20th century on the world stage.

The creation of new trans-Pacific regional forums in recent decades, especially the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Agreement Regional Economic Cooperation (RCEP), have been developed as a consequence of the growing awareness of the benefits of multilateral economic cooperation, focused on the Pacific. Although, with its new protectionist policy, the United States has withdrawn from the TPP, the other eleven signatory countries of said agreement seek to strengthen transpacific relations. 

In the Asia-Pacific region, regional economic relations have grown substantially, leading Mexico to improve its economic relations with the economies of the region. Thus, private and public institutions in Mexico, from small, medium and large companies to national, regional and municipal governments, now have a growing need for global human resources, with the relevant education, training and specialized knowledge, to strengthen their relationships. across the Pacific "mega-region." This is especially the case in both Guadalajara and Jalisco, being a key economic and educational center on the Mexican Pacific coast.

Due to the above, the need arises to create a postgraduate degree in English and with a global vision, focused on transpacific studies and with specialties in: North America, China and Japan; the Master in Global Politics and Transpacific Studies (GP&TPS). The master's program will allow students to deepen their knowledge about the relevance of current trends that involve new actors and new governance processes in international relations. In addition to meeting the objectives of the University of Guadalajara in the search for the expansion and diversification of postgraduate studies with high standards of quality and national and international relevance, in which the essential strategies are: the increase and diversification of enrollment in quality postgraduate.
