The Doctorate in Humanities program is configured from a historical-social horizon with respect to Mexican society that has become a situation of inequality due to the poor distribution of wealth. Faced with this type of social situation, the academic field cannot be indifferent, since a substantive function of public universities is to generate relevant research on the fundamental problems that affect the country. From this, it is necessary a Doctorate in Humanities that feeds back, from the field of theory, the reflection on the problems that are experienced in contemporary Mexico.

The intention is that the Doctorate in Humanities program focuses on social problems from a theoretical dimension, following three guiding threads: culture, language and thought. Of course, the link with the aforementioned problems does not appear immediately, but is mediated by the set of theories that are developed in areas such as philosophy, literature, history, anthropology, linguistics and communication sciences.. This set of disciplines have traditionally carried out their analyzes around the historical-social reality, from semiotic, hermeneutical, literary theories, etc. Under the assumption that theory can guide action through the formulation of regulative principles.

The relevance of the Doctorate in Humanities consists in the idea that education constitutes a basic pillar to achieve greater democratic development in Mexico. And in this sense, it represents an academic possibility to think about one's own culture and its specific features. In addition to this, this postgraduate course is also an opportunity to reflect and generate constructive criticism of contemporary society and culture.
