The PhD program in Materials Science and Engineering was launched in October 2021 as a research-based postgraduate program with the goal of training highly qualified researchers, professors, and professionals in conventional materials for the research and development of new materials. The program features a flexible curriculum that allows for the diversification of human resource development in various basic and applied scientific, technological, and management specialties within polymer science and engineering, surface engineering, tribology, construction materials, hybrid materials, and the simulation and modeling of their manufacturing processes and final characteristics, in accordance with international academic quality standards. This program is designed to be included in the National Quality Postgraduate Program (PNPC), which will be transformed into the National Postgraduate System (SNP). In this regard, the program's Lines of Knowledge Generation and Application (LGAC) are related to the Strategic National Problems (ProNacEs): Water, Housing, and Toxic Agents and Polluting Processes. The nature of the postgraduate program therefore makes it naturally included in Area VIII of the SNI-CONACyT corresponding to Engineering and Technological Development.
This academic program lasts eight semesters (four years). It has four research areas: Polymer Technology, Surface Engineering and Tribology, Modeling and Simulation, and Complex Materials and Ceramics. The degree is awarded upon presentation and defense of a thesis based on original research.
Admission is semester-based, beginning operations in the 2022-A cycle. Tuition costs are 3 Units of Measurement and Update (UMA) per semester for national students and 5 UMAs for international students.

Admission Requirements
In addition to those stipulated by university regulations, the following are required:
For foreign students, documents must be apostilled and/or legalized and, if they are in a language other than Spanish, accompanied by a translation.
- Possess a degree, or proof of graduation from a master's degree related to the postgraduate curriculum, as determined by the Academic Board.
- Certificate of professional studies demonstrating that the master's degree has been completed with a minimum average of eighty, with an original certificate or equivalent document.
- For foreigners, if the master's degree grading scale is not out of 100, a letter of equivalence of the overall average will be required.
- Demonstrate a minimum level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in English or its equivalent.
- Statement of reasons.
- Confidential letter of recommendation from a recognized professor and/or researcher.
- Pass the admission exam designated by the postgraduate academic board.
- Interview with the Academic Board.
- Cover the corresponding fees.
- Those additional ones that are established in the call for applications.
- Foreign applicants must comply with all of the above, demonstrate proficiency in the Spanish language, and present the corresponding immigration authorization.
