The current concept of "Public Health" begins to develop in the mid-eighteenth century, in a time characterized by large social movements that positively impacted the health of the population. Since then it has been defined in various ways: in our program we coincide with a vision committed to  promoting health, preventing disease and prolonging life through the organized effort of society.

Since its inception, two characteristics stand out in the work undertaken by Public Health: its foundation in science and multidisciplinarity.

To respond to the challenges that Public Health faces, different research models have been used, some of which have been proposed (Epidemiology) or developed (Biostatistics) by itself, or have been adopted from other fields of knowledge (Sociology, Anthropology, Ethnography). The diversity of approaches is justified because there is no research method that is ideal for all the circumstances in which we need to collect information.

Our program provides students with the opportunity to develop as researchers in one of the existing scientific/methodological paradigms.
