The University Network implemented in Jalisco by our University of Guadalajara has been the driving force behind the creation and consolidation of the Doctoral Program in City, Territory, and Sustainability. The collaboration of a significant group of specialists and researchers across various centers within the Network, as well as the invaluable support of the Consolidated Academic Group of the Center for Environmental and Territorial Planning Research (UDG-CA-11) at the University Center for Art, Architecture, and Design (CUAAD), has enabled qualitative growth, generating high-quality postgraduate options. Similarly, a significant number of academics from national and international institutions have contributed their experience, expertise, and commitment over the years, accelerating management processes and strengthening the academic, interinstitutional, and interdisciplinary ties necessary for a program of this nature.

In its 25-year history, the Graduate Program has consistently supported the development of inclusive research topics related to the study of vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and, more recently, gender, women, and the city. Throughout the program's history, 165 students have graduated, 93 men and 72 women (44%). Currently, there are 14 full-time professors, 8 of whom are women (57%), and 41% of the 39 regular students are women (16).
In 2021, the Doctoral Program was re-evaluated and maintained its nationally recognized status as a Consolidated Program within the National Program of Quality Graduate Studies (PNPC). This achievement motivates the pursuit of increasingly ambitious goals and rigorous standards aimed at achieving international recognition. In 2025, to reaffirm its national quality accreditation, the program will participate in the new evaluation process within the National Graduate Studies System of SECIHTI.
In this way, the Doctoral Program is presented today as a quality option in the training of Doctors who master the study and urban-territorial intervention, the development and management of geographic space and urban dynamics, with a scientific, interdisciplinary approach and within the framework of the global processes of the information society, in order to achieve a sustainable, human and responsible future, through the generation of new and relevant knowledge, as well as the use of appropriate technologies, and seeks the inclusion of priority topics in research with a focus on gender, citizenship, poverty and empowerment.
The quality of the program led the Central University of Ecuador to establish a specific agreement with the University of Guadalajara to offer the postgraduate program at its Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, located in Quito, Ecuador, with the goal of training its academic staff. Currently, all students from the 2017A-2020B cohort have earned their doctoral degrees. This agreement was renewed in 2019, and the current cohort, 2019B-2022A, comprises 11 students from the same university, 7 of whom have already obtained their doctoral degrees.
