In the state of Jalisco there is only one Master's program in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (MEILE), taught remotely and attached to the University Center of Social Sciences of the University of Guadalajara. This program was the only one in its area in the Central-Western region, until the implementation of the single-generation postgraduate program, Master of English Teaching (MADI), also affiliated with the University of Guadalajara (2008-2010). This program was implemented to cover the needs of the public education sector in the region, in terms of teaching English as a foreign language. The face-to-face nature of the master's degree presented here will be one of the significant differences between both study programs, as well as the terminal orientations it proposes and its special focus on research. Although the degrees in language teaching from the Department of Modern Languages have provided English teachers to public and private schools and institutions, to date, in the region, the number of specialists formally prepared in the teaching disciplines is very limited. of English, linguistics and English cultures, focused on research. This Master's Degree in English Language and Culture Studies (MELCI) aims to form that human capital that will be key in the specialized training of researchers in the area, having as one of its main tasks that of addressing the urgent need of the Higher Education System (SEMS). ) of the University of Guadalajara with regard to the professionalization of its teaching staff and the promotion of research in this field of studies. The program is aimed, therefore, both at training professionals in teaching English as a foreign language and at promoting the study of English languages and cultures. The contents offered are also adapted to the curricular needs of the professional environment of the candidates to take the program.
In this context, the MELCI graduate will be able to carry out research, teaching and/or advisory functions in activities of the social, educational, private and government sectors. The area of teaching English as a foreign language is a very well-defined field for the graduate, who in this field of work has very clear job prospects. Regarding the area of cultural studies, the potential of the labor market in which you can perform professionally is still little known due to the lack of information, however the broad field of work can offer you the opportunity to explore a wide range of possibilities. An element that unites all the axes, both these two and linguistics, is the philological nature of the program, that is, the teaching and/or study of a foreign language guarantees a work space mainly in the area of teaching languages, whether as a researcher, teacher, teacher trainer and/or program administrator.
Another peculiarity of the postgraduate program is its special international focus, which can already be corroborated with the number of guest professors of the program, as well as with one of its main goals, which consists of managing the necessary resources to support its students so that through of the collaboration agreements that the University of Guadalajara has with foreign universities with similar study programs can carry out student mobility stays. The experience acquired in the Department of Modern Languages within the framework of the Bachelor's Degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (LIDILE) will be decisive in this process, especially due to the great meaning that these stays have had for the undergraduate students.
