In the program, a wide variety of  advanced courses  are offered in pure and applied mathematics. The large number of scientific activities  in Montreal as well as the quality of our courses make our programs among the best in North America.

Goals:

Pure Mathematics option To train seasoned researchers in the Department's main areas of research in mathematics: analysis, probability, number theory, topology and geometry, algebraic geometry with a view to a career as a university or CEGEP professor or researcher in private or government enterprise.


Applied Mathematics option Train seasoned researchers in the Department's main areas of research in applied mathematics: biomathematics, differential equations, mathematical physics, data science, numerical analysis. The latter may hold positions in academia, industry or government enterprises.


Engineering Mathematics Option This option is offered jointly with École Polytechnique and administered by the latter.


Actuarial Science and Financial Mathematics Option Train seasoned researchers in actuarial science or financial mathematics. The latter may hold positions in academia or in various companies, including insurance companies, actuarial offices, banks, etc.

Admission requirements

Undergraduate

To be eligible as a regular Ph.D. (mathematics) student, the candidate must:
  • meet the general eligibility conditions (section XX of the Academic Regulations) for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
  • hold a M.Sc. (mathematics), or a 2nd cycle diploma adequately preparing for the studies he wants to undertake, or attest to training deemed equivalent, or hold a Bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Montreal with an exceptional record.
  • have obtained in the 2nd cycle an average of at least 3.3 out of 4.3 or the equivalent

Teaching is done in French. The student must have a sufficient knowledge of French. A good knowledge of English is desirable.
