The Ph.D. program in music offered by the Faculty of Music of the Université de Montréal is a research training program covering a wide range of perspectives for the study of music:
  • historical musicology,
  • musical analysis and theory,
  • semiology of music, philosophy of music, musical aesthetics,
  • ethnomusicology, anthropology of music
  • sociomusicology,
  • music mediation,
  • cinemusicology, ludomusicology,
  • cognitive and experimental musicology, musical acoustics, psychoacoustics, biomusicology
  • digital musicology, computer music,
  • organology,
  • analysis of the creative processes in music,
  • research-creation (performance, improvisation, composition), as well as any interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of these disciplines and other related disciplines (visual arts, cinema, literature, political science, sociology, psychology, computer science, movement science, etc.).

The program allows you to deepen your knowledge of the major trends in music research by specializing in a specific and innovative subject. The objective of a Ph.D. is to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and to integrate into contemporary scientific and musicological debates. The training also helps consolidate mastery of oral and written communication skills, particularly by encouraging the transmission and dissemination of knowledge. The program is as open to university teaching and research as it is to professional life in different cultural environments.
Different musical repertoires are covered (sophisticated and popular Western music, world music, film and video game music). The analysis of these artistic objects, of their creation and transmission processes, as well as the entire ecosystem that supports them, are all possible lines of research in this program.
