The Bachelor of Science in Food Technology (formerly Chemistry and Food Technology) lasts 3½ years including internship. You learn to use your knowledge within classic natural science subjects such as mathematics, chemistry, physics and biotechnology in an engineering context with a focus on food production. Afterwards, you can apply to continue your studies at the Master of Science in Molecular Nutrition and Food Technology or you can choose to enter the labor market.

During the program, you will work with technologies that can pave the way for healthier and more sustainable food production, and you will gain a detailed understanding of the food industry and its innovation needs.

You will be trained to work on projects in groups, and you will learn to use your knowledge of chemistry and biotechnology to solve real-world problems in the food industry. For example, you may need to develop new enzymes that keep bread fresh for longer, or you may need to work on improving the taste of a plant-based steak. Perhaps you will need to ferment a certain type of seaweed so that it can be better digested by humans, or you may need to experiment with using whey from dairy production for protein supplements.

As an important part of your education, you must acquire basic scientific knowledge that gives you insight into all processes in technology-based food production from raw materials to finished products. The education includes some chemistry that enables you to design new food products at the molecular level and more efficient production methods. At the same time, as an engineer in food technology, you must have knowledge of human nutrition, sensory science and business law.

You have the opportunity to specialize through project work in almost every semester. Perhaps you are particularly interested in the chemistry part and dream of working on the development of foods with special functional properties or health-promoting ingredients. Or perhaps you are interested in production equipment and dream of developing new technology that can streamline future food production and secure food for a growing global population in an economically and environmentally sustainable way.

Everyday life at the studio The education for an engineer in Food Technology includes classroom instruction, lectures, laboratory work and project work.

In all semesters, you must follow a study program with approximately 23 teaching hours and also expect to spend time on preparation, laboratory experiments and independent project work in groups.

Innovation and entrepreneurship As an engineering student at Aarhus University, you will become skilled at translating your knowledge into solutions. You will work with new technologies and innovation as a fully integrated part of your learning. Engineers from Aarhus University are, as a group, among Denmark's most successful entrepreneurs, and you may also want to start a business as a student or when you have graduated.

Paid internship and specialization In the fifth semester, you, as an engineering student, will do an internship in a company, where you will gain practical experience with the engineering challenges of the industry. The internship may be paid by agreement with the individual company. Aarhus University will help you find an internship that matches your professional interests and future career aspirations. You also have the opportunity to use your internship semester to try your hand at life as an entrepreneur, where you can work on maturing your business idea in one of the university's entrepreneurial environments.
Career opportunities As a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Food Technology, you will have a competency profile that is attractive and in demand in the food industry. You will be able to work with food innovation, product development, process management and quality assurance at a high level in both small niche companies and large industrial groups.
