South Asia is the name given to the region that includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Together, these countries account for almost a quarter of the world's population. Home to one of the world's oldest civilisations, it is the birthplace of Gandhi, the home of yoga and Bollywood (the world's largest film industry), and a major centre for global culture and trade. With one of the world's youngest populations, a growing middle class and strong economic growth, South Asia is a region with enormous economic potential. The region is playing an increasingly important role, creating great opportunities and jobs around the world. Furthermore, extensive knowledge of the region, including knowledge of Hindi, the third most spoken language in the world, is a significant advantage for anyone wishing to study or work in the region or collaborate with partners in the region.
Indian and South Asian Studies combines anthropology, history, political science and language (Hindi) The Bachelor's degree in Indian and South Asian Studies is built around an anthropological, disciplinary core supplemented by historical and political science approaches as well as solid language skills. With India and South Asia as a starting point, students develop their cross-cultural competences through the use of anthropological frameworks and other relevant social sciences. They acquire extensive knowledge of India and South Asia and the social, cultural, political and economic conditions of the region, as well as the diverse – and changing – daily patterns in the area. Although the degree focuses on India, it also addresses regional similarities and social and political conditions in countries such as Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Students also learn to speak, read and write Hindi, which is the most widely spoken language in South Asia. Prior knowledge of Hindi is not a requirement.
The small classes allow for close collaboration between the teacher and the students, as well as between the students. Both a theoretical and a practical approach is adopted in the teaching, alternating between lectures, discussions, practical exercises, reading group activities and presentations from the students.

The students spend a semester in India, where they receive intensive instruction in Hindi, strengthen their intercultural communication, and experience firsthand a globalized India, which is both a regional powerhouse and a developing country facing pressing challenges, limited infrastructure, and striving for new goals.
