The proposed qualification takes the form of a professionally oriented Master's Degree in Advocacy within the framework of the regulated profession of lawyer. It responds to the regulations approved in our country in view of the Comparative Law and reaches an indisputable and special professional, academic and scientific interest for the Universidad de Vigo and for the Autonomous Community of Galicia.

In the experience of comparative law, it has been observed that appearing before courts of law and other legal assistance activities require prior accreditation of a professional qualification that goes beyond obtaining a university degree. This justified the regulation of a professional qualification complementary to the university degree in Law: the professional qualification of lawyer, which is available to provide legal assistance using the name of lawyer. In the European Union, in the majority of countries, in order to exercise the profession of lawyer, a period of training is required after obtaining a degree in Law or equivalent and, on this basis; various rules were established in our legal system in this line of action.

The profession of lawyer has traditionally been recognised in our legal system as a regulated profession. Currently, Annex VIII of Royal Decree 1837/2008, of 8 November, transposing various Community Directives, currently includes the profession of lawyer within the list of regulated professions and activities in our country, for the purposes of applying the system of recognition of qualifications regulated in this Royal Decree. It is a rule that replaced the previous Royal Decree 1665/1991, of 25 October, which regulated the general system for the recognition of higher education qualifications in the Member States of the European Union and other State(s) parties to the Agreement on the European Economic Area, signed on 2 May 1992, and ratified by Spain on 26 November 1993, where the profession of lawyer was already recognised as a regulated profession in our country.
