Business and international trade law is a strong sector of the Faculty of Law. The master's program meets the expectations and needs of Quebec and foreign lawyers in the context of market globalization.

The master's program in business law with dissertation has a dual objective. On the one hand, you deepen your knowledge in a stimulating environment that combines both theory and practice. On the other hand, this cutting-edge training allows you to design and implement a research project in a specific field by writing a dissertation.

The development of research and the completion of a dissertation constitute an important component of the program. You are expected to work closely with the person who directs your research program; Moreover, it is you who choose your director from among the specialists in the field.

Students registered for the master's degree in business law can also take courses offered as part of the exchange program, Master 2 Professional – specialty Comparative business law, offered by the Faculty of Law and Political Science of the University Lumière Lyon I, in the fall term. In the winter, courses are offered by the UdeM Faculty of Law.

General eligibility conditions

To be eligible as a regular student, the candidate must meet the general eligibility conditions (section XI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Required diplomas and admission thresholds: Quebec

To meet the Université de Montréal average of 3.0 out of 4.3, candidates from this province must meet the following requirements:

Accepted diploma: Baccalaureate, Bachelor; duration of 3 years, or other undergraduate degree deemed equivalent.

  • Higher Technology School: 3.0/4.3
  • HEC Montreal: 3.0/4.3

Conditions specific to this program

To be eligible as a regular student at the LL. M. (business law) - with dissertation, the candidate must:

  • meet the general eligibility conditions (section XI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
  • hold a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Montreal or a diploma deemed equivalent
  • have obtained, in the 1st cycle, in the microprogram or the DESS, an average of at least 3.0 out of 4.3 or the equivalent. Candidates whose average is between 3.0 and 3.3 or the equivalent must provide additional documents, a list of which can be found on the Faculty of Law website at www.droit.umontreal.ca/ deuxieme_cycle/admission.html
  • demonstrate a good knowledge of French and English.
The dean is not required to admit all applicants who meet the eligibility requirements.
