As an empirical cultural science, empirical cultural studies examines everyday cultural phenomena and practices in their historical and social dimensions. She analyzes the historical development of contemporary societies, focusing on cultural processes and everyday life.

The focus is therefore on the concept of culture as the constant negotiation of the sets of rules that organize how individuals and social groups interact with one another. Questions are asked about the cultural logic of ideas and interpretations, practices and life plans. The analysis of everyday life should contribute in particular to understanding social and cultural differences as a result of or in the context of change processes. In addition to introductory compulsory courses, the course offers three subject areas (city and urbanity, technology and mediality, material culture), which enable students to set their own priorities.
