In the General Linguistics master's program, students learn to analyze the functions and characteristics of linguistic phenomena across languages. Learning goals are, on the one hand, the targeted use of empirical methods, the critical assessment of theoretical concepts and a confident handling of modern analysis methods of the subject. On the other hand, gaining knowledge about general characteristics of human languages ​​- related to their development, their relationship to cognitive processes and to social practice. For this purpose, structural knowledge of at least two non-Indo-European languages ​​is imparted.
Students can set an individual focus by choosing one of the three subject profiles:
  • language typology
  • language usage
  • speech perception

In addition to the main areas mentioned, the Master's course offers the opportunity to get in touch with other research areas, such as language teaching research, variation linguistics and regional language research (especially Low German) or media linguistics and computer philology.
