Social economics deals with the social consequences of economic activity and the social influences on economic activities. It is characteristic of the scientific approach of social economics to address the interactions between economy and society by linking sociological, economic and legal issues. The course is therefore interdisciplinary and includes the subjects of business administration, commercial and labor law, sociology and economics.

First, the students acquire basic knowledge in all subjects. It is not until the second year of study that they decide on one of the subjects as their main subject, in which they also earn their bachelor's degree. The other three subjects accompany the studies in the main subject in the form of an interdisciplinary supplement. Around 300 students are admitted every semester. Up to 40 percent of the places are reserved for applicants without a high school diploma who, for example, have passed a subject-related entrance exam. A large proportion of students go abroad as part of a university partnership; some partnership agreements allow for simultaneous degrees at the University of Hamburg and in the attended bachelor's program of the respective partner university.
