Systematic musicology focuses its cognitive interest on the physical, biological, psychological, cultural and social foundations of music, its forms of existence and effects. Systematic musicology uses empirical and experimental methods to investigate the question of how physically measurable sound processes (acoustics) are received by the ear, processed neuronally and become objects of perception (psychoacoustics, music psychology). This is followed by the investigation of the reception and the aesthetic evaluation (experimental reception research, music aesthetics) taking into account the social and cultural context (music sociology, ethnomusicology/comparative musicology).
Systematic musicology also deals with today's manifestations of pop music, its mediation through technical media and the conditions of its production and reception. The sub-areas of music theory, music philosophy and instrument knowledge combine systematic with historical musicology. As part of the course, knowledge and skills are imparted, on the basis of which the students are able to work scientifically independently in the entire spectrum of the subject. It is possible to focus on either scientific and music-theoretical aspects or social and cultural aspects within the framework of the course.
